The Rural Voice, 1987-01, Page 29one for wheat (with underseeded
clover). He finds this an ideal rotation
and one that is good for the soil. But
after harvesting his corn, he realized
that there was too much twitch in the
corn field to ignore, and that some-
thing had to be done. So he bit the
bullet. There was too much stover and
the calendar made it too late for Round-
up, so atrazine got the nod. Another
shot will follow post -emerge this year.
Yes, there may be two or even
three years of continuous corn, but
then twitch shouldn't be a problem in
that field for many years. Ted Oud is
concerned about the wheat -beans -wheat
rotation in the other two fields because
one field is twitchy enough already.
"That field as well should be going
into corn for the atrazine treatment,"
he noted. You can see where the well-
planned rotation is heading. But
through good weed control in the
wheat and the use of Roundup, this
grower can maintain two-thirds of his
rotation and still beat the twitch.
Don't get me wrong. I believe
in making rotations and building
organic matter and improving soil
structure. Several years of continuous
corn isn't all bad. No other crop re-
turns the amount of dead residue that
corn stover does. It's just the early
working in the spring and the mucking
around in the late fall with heavy
equipment that louse it up.0
