even with supply management."
The Americans will demand
greater access to the Canadian market
on key supply -managed sectors like
milk, chicken and eggs and if they
get it, in the next round they'll
demand still more access until supply
management has been destroyed, he
says.
Part of the reason there's such a
different reaction to today's hard
times than in the past may stem from
an erosion in the sense of community
even from the 1980s or 1970s.
People did more things together, he
says, from the Women's Institute to
large attendance at farm meetings.
"I have many people say to me 'I
wouldn't go to that farm meeting. If I
go I'll end up getting a job.' They
might be right," he chuckles,
"because there won't be many people
there. They just don't want to get
involved."
The problem is when today's
parents demonstrate a
reluctance to get involved in
their community they also send a
silent message to the next generation
now growing up, Gaunt says.
"Attitudes are formed in the home.
Character is formed in the home.
Values are formed in the home. If
parents are not involved, if parents
take the attitude that they're too busy
to get involved, I think that rubs off
on the kids and it becomes part of
their value system as they grow up."
But with a growing world
population and the reality that food
production is absolutely essential to
feed those people, farming still has a
huge importance in the world, he
says.
"Farmers will always be needed to
produce food for the masses and that
being the case there certainly are
some bright spots down the road for
farm people who are able to hanging
in there and develop and effective
business.. Survival will have to be
part of the game plan, but for those
who can survive in tough times, I
think there will be a lot of good times
down the road."
Nothing drives humans more than
the desire to survive and if survival
becomes the main priority there will
be the kind of changes in attitude
which will get farmers more involved
