"People are disappointed that it didn't live up to what they had hoped," Del Bianco says. Like a big wedding that's supposed to be so special, it can seem anticlimactic. "Try not to be concerned about what other people are thinking or expecting." Field advises. Do what you are able to do, not what you think people expect of you. Make time for yourself and your own family, both counsellors advise. If there is too little time between activities or if you're trying to do two or three things at once, stress will mount, Field says. Del Bianco advises sitting down before the Christmas rush starts and blocking in some time for the solitude you need — a personal self- care plan. "Give yourself the gift of slowing down and of solitude. Take some time before the time gets taken." Try to avoid the excesses of .the season, Field says. When people are faced with stress. people may eat more than they should or drink more than they should. "People respond to stress by doing things that become the problem," he says. Better to have discipline to limit yourself to a few drinks and "strong arms to push yourself away from the table". The self-discipline will make you feel better about yourself and prevent the problems caused by overindulging. Likewise, discipline your thinking, Field says. Don't let yourself get into negative thoughts. Try to focus on positives. And finally, he says, if despite all these tips you feel the emotional, physical and mental symptoms of stress building, reach out and ask for help. Even talking to a friend can help you anchor your own sense 01 what's important and what's not, he says. "I get a lot more calls at Christmas," he says. • But often, he says, asking for help a little sooner, managing your stress better, would make it easier to help. "Ask for help well before you need it," he says.0
