When we think of safety in the
workplace we usually think of the
actual site where we do our work.
Another serious work-related concern
is travelling on the job or the
commute to and from work. In Huron
County and other areas of rural
Ontario, we have a special interest at
harvest season when farm vehicles
are on the roads.
The Huron Perth 1999 Safe
Harvest Campaign was organized by
the Huron Perth Safe Farming_
Coalition. This coalition was formed
by members of farming organizations
and the Huron Perth Injury
Prevention Committee's (HPIPC)
.Farr Safety and Traffic
Subcommittees. HPIPC was
established in 1995. The other two
subcommittees are bicycle safety and
fails in seniors. Mem'oers include
community volunteers,
representatives from the District
Health Council, health units,
Community Care Access, hospitals,
farm safety groups, police, media, the
Ministry of Transportation and
community agencies and businesses.
New members are always welcome.
The 1999 Safe Harvest Campaign
was designed for both farmers and
drivers who drive on rural roads.
Signs were posted at grain elevators
so that farmers could read a safety
message while waiting to unload their
products. The sign asks farmers "Do

you feel safe?" the four main points
are: stopping distances will vary;
drowsiness kills, the liability rests
with you, and your equipment needs
include safety chains, reflective tape
and appropriate lighting. There is
also a fact sheet available on farm
safety containing information such as
that the fine is $375 if the total
combined length from front to back
(plated farm vehicle and wagon)
exceeds 23 metres (75'5"). Examples
of additional facts are that any farm
plated vehicle without proper lighting
that exceeds 2.6 metres in width is
eligible for a fine of $275 and that
there is a fine ranging from a
minimum of $400 to a maximum of
$20,000 for any plated farm or
commercial motor vehicle that is
deemed to be unsafe.
For drivers in rural areas, safe
harvest slogans are being printed on a
number of statements for local
businesses and in newsletters for
local businesses and agencies. Local
newspapers, radio and television have
been requested to use the slogans as
fillers from July until October. The

move mountains. Whether you are a
