The Rural Voice, 1999-10, Page 38RURAL LIVING Scare up some fun treats for Halloween Selected by Bonnie Gropp The night belongs to ghosts and goblins but Halloween can be lots of fun for little trick or treaters. Scare up some imagination and create some Halloween treats to put your youngster in the spirit or to delight the spooky character who conies knocking at your door. TOFFEE APPLES 3 (56 g) bars creamy toffee 1 tbsp (15 mL) water 4 apples popsicle sticks coloured candies, toasted oat cereal, chopped pecans and/or coconut (optional) Smack wrapped toffee on counter to break bars. Unwrap and place in 2 - cup (500 mL) microwaveable glass measure; add water. Microwave at high for 1-2 minutes or until boiling, stirring once. Stir until smooth. Pierce apples with sticks. Dip into melted toffee, twirling to coat. Before toffee hardens, decorate each apple with candies, cereal pieces, nuts or coconut if desired. Set on wax paper -lined tray; chill 3-4 minutes to set toffee. Store in refrigerator. CARAMEL CORN AND NUTS 1 (100 g) pkg plain or Tight microwave popcorn 1 cup (250 mL) peanuts or mixed assorted nuts 3 (56 g) toffee bars 3 tbsp (50 mL) butter I tbsp (15 mL) milk Prepare popcorn according to package directions. Empty into large microwaveable glass bowl; discard unpopped kernels. Stir in nuts. Smack wrapped toffee on counter to break bars. Unwrap and place in 2 - cup (500 mL) microwaveable glass measure. Add butter and milk. Microwave at high for 2-2 1/2 minutes or until boiling, stirring once. Stir; pour over popcorn, stirring until coated. 34 THE RURAL VOICE The Halloween Creepy Crawler, made with cupcakes and M & M's chocolate candies, is a deliciously spooky treat that's perfect for sharing at Halloween parties. Microwave at high for 2-3 minutes to heat through (bowl will be hot.) Pour onto waxed paper -lined tray. Cool for 10-15 minutes or until crispy. Note: If caramel corn is still sticky after cooling, microwave an additional 1-1 1/2 minutes. ALL HALLOW'S EVE BLACK ORANGES (A quick and easy dessert treat for a Halloween party) 2 oranges 1 cup (250 mL) granulated sugar 1 cup (250 mL) Triple Brownie Overload Ice Cream Using sharp knife, carefully cut off top of oranges in zig-zag fashion. With spoon, scoop out flesh and push through sieve, saving juice in small saucepan. Add sugar and bring to boil; boil stirring occasionally until thickened slightly. Let cool. Fill the empty shells with ice cream; freeze until ready to serve. Pour orange syrup over top and sprinkle with a few shreds of orange rind. HALLOWEEN CREEPY CRAWLERS 1 cup (250 mL) all-purpose flour 3/4 cup (175 mL) granulated sugar 2 tbsp (25 mL) unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tsp (5 mL) baking powder 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt 1/2 cup (125 mL) milk 1/3 cup (75 mL) butter, softened 2 eggs 1 can (16oz/450mL) ready -to - spread chocolate frosting 1 (227 g) bag plain or peanut coloured chocolate candies or 1 (340 g) bag semi -sweet chocolate baking bits Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Set 12 large paper baking cups in muffin pans. Combine flour, sugar, cocoa,
