worms". The experiment failed but
some of the caterpillars escaped.
Their new surroundings offered
plenty of food and few natural
enemies and they spread quickly.

means the insect can spread rapidly.
Michigan authorities speculate the
source of that state's infestation
could be campers returning from the
northeastern states. In 1992 the moth
was responsible for the largest
defoliation of trees in the state's
history.
Though few have ever seen it, the
Asian Long -Horned Beetle is sending
a chill through Ontario's forest
industry. When a live beetle was
discovered in a Waterloo warehouse
(it came into Canada in the wood of a
pallet from China) the Ministry of
Natural Resources issued a forest
health alert. The beetle had earlier
arrived in New York City and
Chicago areas, doing extensive
damage.
Canada's temperate climate is
well-suited to the establishment of
the insect. Even in cold winters it is
protected because the larvae burrow
into the wood, insulating themselves
from the cold. The beetle has no
known natural enemies in Canada.
Insecticides are ineffective because
the larvae burrow deep into the tree.
The only way to combat them is to
identify, cut down and burn or chip
the infected tree.
Adults feed on the leaves and bark
of tender shoots of broadleaf trees.
Mature larvae bore into the tree and
create large, winding galleries in the
inner wood, eventually killing the
host. Adults chew their way out of
the wood, creating large, circular exit
holes.0
