potential," Eccles says. The ideal
maple syrup tree is similar to those
growing on fence rows or in open
fields, taking in lots of sunlight.
As a consultant, Eccles says, he
has to make people aware that maple
syrup production and high quality
lumber production do not go hand in
hand. Tapping for maple syrup rules
out the tree as a candidate for veneer
production. The tapping produces a
staining that goes both up and down
the trunk from the holes.
n addition, he says, tapping for
maple syrup produces a
discolouring of the wood. "In this
area we have the best maple in the
world," he says of the very white
wood produced by timber -quality
maples. "As soon as you tap it the
wood is yellow." Tapping drops the
value of a maple tree by $200-$400
per thousand board feet, Eccles says.
Still, he points out, over the years
you'll make this and more back from
maple syrup production.
Smith says a management plan is
an educational tool. It forces people
to think about their woodland.
something people aren't used to
doing a lot of. The consultant then
must explain the ramifications of
those decisions.
Still, it's all too much for some
landowners, says Lennox Brindle. "A
lot of people want the tax break but
they're not willing to put any effort
into their forest."0

The blade anchors the unit to
the ground preventing the
tractor from slipping backward
and takes the strain off the
tractor. The cable is easy to
pull out as the winch drum
free wheels easily.
The winch is operated
with a control rope from a
safe position on either
side of the unit.
The 3 -point linkage s
raised so the logs are 1-2
feet off the ground and the
logs are skidded to the
landing.
