The Rural Voice, 1999-09, Page 45l
r
the urban and rural areas of the
county.
The display is built around the
Huron County Showcase Rest Area
which will easily be spotted by foot -
weary show visitors by the towering
60 -foot flag pole with a huge
Canadian flag (formerly on the Peace
Tower in Ottawa). The rest area,
sponsored by the Ausable Bayfield
and Maitland Valley Conservation
Authorities, will allow people to
stroll pathwqs or rest on a bench.
The area will reconstruct some of the
landscape of the county, from
forested areas to marshes and ponds
to meadows where you can stop at a
picnic table.
Also adding to the beauty of the
Showcase area are flowers, plants
and decorations provided by the
horticultural societies and garden
clubs of the county.
Flags of all the municipalities in
the county will also be on
display in the promenade
leading to the county tents. The
county will highlight the services
offered by the county and municipal
levels of government, the business
development of the county, cultural
services, transportation and quality of
life.
An area dedicated to industry will
feature five theme areas, agriculture,
home and leisure, manufacturing,
natueal resources and services.
An educational display area will
focus on the students themselves.
Huron County has been a leader in
the use of computers in education
and a special feature will be an
interactive computer lab where
visitors can watch students as they
get a little on-line, computer assisted
learning using special computer
programs.
The agriculture and tourism tent
gives visitors a chance to see the
agriculture of the largest agricultural
county in the province. Featured are
a sheep show, including shearing
demonstrations, a cow being milked
and a spectacular commodity display
— a unique patchwork of seed
varieties, fruits and vegetables.
Centrepiece of the display will be
a huge 40 -by -8 -foot mural painted by
Bruce County muralist Allen
Hilgendorf, depicting present and
past IPMs held in the county.
The Showcase also has an
