As the days dwindle away, the
opening day nears and the
tremendous amount of work to he
done has workers at the site every
day, one wonders what enticed the
the Beckers to offer their farm for the
endeavour.
Ah gut five years ago, Becker
saw information about the
possibility of a Huron County
bid for the 1999 IPM in a local paper.
After casually mentioning interest,
he was invited to attend a Huron
County Plowmens' Association
committee meeting in early 1995.
Soon. friend Gerry Thiel carne on
board and put together a brochure
about the Hay Twp. community, its
services and what the location had to
offer.
"He was very thrilled and excited
about the opportunity," says Becker.
A big supporter of plowing
matches throughout his life, Becker
says he got involved in such an
undertaking because of pride in his
community.
He also says it started as "a little
bit of a joke." The Beckers have
missed very few plowing matches
over the years and they laughed
when they thought if they hosted it,
they wouldn't have far to travel.
"It is a great honour to be able to
