County Federation of Agriculture NEWSLETTER
Better safe than sorry
When you are doing any job on
the farm, safety should be the first
consideration.
One of the first precautions for
farm families, as drivers are often
spouses, teenaged children or
summer employees, is the use of
motorized vehicles on the road when
hauling or transporting equipment or
produce.
Some safety concerns that should
be clearly given and time allowed for
questions so that you know that the
message has been received and
understood are:
1) NO RIDERS ... ever.
2) Making sure that the driver knows
what is expected of them. e.g. where
they are going, route to be taken, how
to turn out of the laneway with a long
load or what to do when going up a
slight grade and matching the speed
with the load. Clear instructions to
stay away from hills, streams and
ditches.
3) Making sure what you are hauling
is securely attached.
4) Making sure your SMV sign is

risible and reflectors are clean.
5) Know how to use the brakes.
6) Make sure no one is behind, under
or in front of equipment before
moving.
7) Starting to move forward slowly
and changing gears gradually.
8) If you are using an inexperienced
driver, making sure there is
supervision close by.
Make sure your family farm
business INSTALLS the red and
amber reflection tape on the rear and
side of tractors and all farm
equipment to reduce nighttime
collisions. This is being supplied to
Perth OFA members by the Perth
County Federation of Agriculture,
and the Farm Mutuals in Perth
County. It does none of us any good
sitting on a shelf.
Another important part of farm
safety is always the health of the
family. During cropping it is
important to take regular breaks,
drink lots of fluids, have regular
meals, picnic lunches or bag lunches

fatigue level. All too often it is the
tiredness and stress that slows good
judgement and can result in costly
accidents.
At the end of the day, always
thinking about what COULD happen
in a situation will reduce the
possibilities of accidents. We all
think it will not happen to us but it
COULD. Do you feel safe and is the

work safe? Better to be safe ... than
