Check out IPM site as event nears
By Janice Becker
It is innovative, informative, fun
and shows great consideration for the
user. It is everything a good website
should be.
The site I am referring to is the
Huron Shines in '99 site set up by JP
Computers of Brussels for the
International Plowing Match to be
held in the Dashwood area of south-
ern Huron County,
September 21-25.
Though there may be a
little pride in a local site
having been constructed so
well, it is truly one of the
most easily maneuvered,
with a tremendous amount
of information easily
accessible.
Because of the ongoing
planning for the IPM, the site is fre-
quently updated. When I recently
checked out the site, updates had
been completed the previous day
The home page is bright with
loads of material to scan.
The small photographs used to
highlight the latest activities allow
the page to load quickly.
Right up front, visitors find out.
who the lucky winners were in the
early -bird ticket purchase contest.
Unfortunately, for those who have
not bought tickets, the opportunity to
get in on the draw for a $40,000
mobile home will pass on August 1.
The most current plans and sched-
ule confirmations are listed on the
home page for a fast update on
events.
For those looking for more detail,
a listing of categories sits to the left
of the page.
From there, material on accommo-
dations, maps, tickets, committees,
guidelines and policies, and even the
Soup of the Match recipe can be
accessed.
Throughout the site, forms for
camping reservations, exhibit infor-
mation or other entries, can be print-
ed off.
However, it is the detail I find the
most useful.
If you are interested in finding a
place to stay while visiting the IPM,
the site lists campgrounds, hotels,
motels, bed and breakfasts and pri-
vate home accommodations with
details as to the amenities, conve-
nience to the plowing match, costs
and contact numbers.
If the Sunday evening interdenom-
inational church service is appealing,
the site tells about their scheduled
guest speaker, Lucknow native and
NHL hero Paul Henderson.
With a 300 -voice mass choir and
the leadership of young
people from nine churches,
the service is bound to be
moving.
The nine churches
involved are also listed.
All net proceeds from the
service will go to the
Canadian Food Grains
Bank.
If good home cooking is
more to your liking, there is an ample
file filled with recipes submitted for
the cooking challenges.
For educators looking for instruc-
tional opportunities for their students,
a contact name is included.
A master schedule of all the musi-
cal entertainment, displays and
exhibits for the five-day event can be
printed so you are sure not to miss a
favourite.
Beyond the great information
regarding the IPM, the site has
included some terrific links to other
community events and attractions in
the region.
With its agricultural roots, the site
also connects with common ag sites
which may be of use to those casually
surfing the web or a handy reminder
on just where to find them when in
real need of serious information.
The IPM site, located at www.
ipm99.on.ca, is definitely worth a
look. You could be one of the more
than 12,000 people who have already
checked it out.
The only disappointing aspect to
this site is the fact that it will not con-
tinue to be of use beyond September.
I welcome comments, feedback,
suggestions for future investigation or
material on a great ag site you have
found. Contact me a becker@
