The Rural Voice, 1999-07, Page 25with a smile. Still, because they are
so dry the bedding only needs to be
changed every two to three weeks.
Generally it's a day's work to change
the bedding and check each animal.
There is room for growth in the
industry, Golem feels. The number of
ranchers could probably double
without flooding the market, he says.
He feels it's a good time to be getting
into the business because markets
won't sink any lower and there's
potential for growth.
Chinchillas are attractive to
grow because of their low
input costs. If prices aren't the
best, a breeder can afford to feed
them until their next prime pelt
develops. As well, pelts can be stored
in the freezer to await better markets.
Golem likes to aim for the early
winter market which he feels brings
best returns.
But chinchilla ranching is not for
everyone. There's a large
responsibility having the animals
which means you can't just take off
for a holiday when you want to (the
Golem's try to get some vacation
time in September or October when
the work load is Tight on both the
farm and with the chinchillas).
Generally one person should be in
charge of looking after the animals.
And there's also the job of pelting
which some people won't want to
take on.
Despite being part of the fur
industry, chinchilla ranchers have not
had the harassment of mink or other
ranchers. Part of it may be because
chinchillas in the wild are an
endangered species, in part because
their habitat in South America has
been destroyed, and by raising them,
ranchers are preserving the species.
Chinchilla ranchers also were one of
the first farming industries to adopt a
code of practice. Golem's operation
is inspected and certified every five
years by his local veterinarian. It's
among his only vet bills. He doesn't
remember if he has ever had to use
an antibiotic.
Those worried about the
environment should welcome fur
clothing because it's a natural
product, he says. Nature has the
enzymes to break down fur when it is
discarded. "We really only borrow it
from nature for a little while. We've
been doing this for hundreds and
thousands of years."0
