Commission should
look at packers'
tactics
During a recent Grey -Bruce
meeting, discussion centered around
the action taken by our provincial
board. Specifically, with regard to the
passage of two resolutions at our
annual meeting calling for an end to
direct producer/processor contracts.
These resolutions passed handily by
majority votes.
This matter came under the
scrutiny of the Farm Products
Marketing Commission. After
considering a written presentation
from a major processor as well as a
presentation by representatives of the
OPPMB, the Commission responded
to the Board as follows:
"Please be advised that the
January 26, 1996 marketing order
of the Commission continues to
stand. Producers and processors
must continue to have the
opportunity to negotiate the terms
of contracts one on one and they
must continue to have the ability
to enter into short and long-term
contracts.
Although we understand the
pressure your Board has been
under by your grower body to
eliminate direct producer -
processor contract, we appreciate
your Board's decision to continue
to have this option as part of your
1999 marketing plan. We are
concerned, however, with your
Board's desire to make changes to
the contracting protocols. The
Commission would like to advise
you to exercise caution in this
