14 THE RURAL VOICE
farm. They report on the trim of
horses' hooves and the condition of
their coats.
Groups such as Animal Alliance
and Animal Rights and Ecological
Awareness are interested in animal
welfare issues, and they look for
signs of pain and injury, noting
preferential treatment which means
good food and veterinary care.
That the local Humane Society is
opposed to injury, torment or stress is
something everyone can identify
with, but visits of animal rights
activists, such as ladies acting as
customers, but instead noting an
animal's condition and reporting it,
have caused consternation and
possibly even ruined sales.
Because of problems caused by
people constantly arriving and
looking, Mantz turns down
busloads of school children as a
result.
"I couldn't get any farm work
done if I had to entertain," he
explained.
Some people don't realize farm or
wild animals don't always respond
well to being confined, being a show
or entertainment. They forget how
dangerous some animal's behaviour
can be for unsuspecting people, such
as biting, kicking, or running so that
often the public can't go to a private
farm. Animals get used to people so
they don't start at loud voices, but the
public can't count on this, if they
aren't used to farm or wild animals.
Animals living on a farm have a
much larger space to run and the
housing is usually good. The main
concern for animals as pets is
adequate shelter.
According to a Humane society
official, the most common solution
with a pet or animal in trouble,
"injured, sick or in pain, suffering
hardship or neglect" is to call the vet.
At this farm, the visit of the vet,
who often doesn't know what to do
with a (lama and never knows the
solution with a zebra and who tries a
little of this and a little of that, is
often mixed with hopefulness rather
than expertise.
Acquiring his curious menagerie
locally, at sales, or by importing
them, Jack says his farm is a pastime, _
"I'II be doing the same thing five
years from now, so it's important to .
think ahead to what kind of animals
people might be wanting."0
