61,000 in 1996 the overall number of
animal units has dropped by four per
cent in the same period, mostly
because of the decline of the cattle
industry, though numbers of swine
have increased.
If there was good news in the
study it was that seven of nine water
quality testing stations showed a
decreasing trend in total phosphorous
concentration, perhaps, Joy said, due
to acceptance of soil conservation
tillage techniques which prevent soil
erosion. Balanced against that is the
fact six of nine of the same water
quality testing stations showed a
significant increasing trend for nitrate
concentrations and four of nine
showed a significant increasing trend
for fecal coliform concentration.
But if the study created more
questions than answers,
getting the answers to the new
questions will be difficult withorut
some help. For one thing, the study
says, the provincial government
should start up its water quality
testing stations which were closed in
budget cuts. "The PWQMSs are the
only source of Tong -term surface
water quality data in the county and
without this information it would not
be possible to determine trends in
water quality," the report said. The
Maitland Valley Conservation
authority has restarted some of the
stations in its area but the Ausable
Bayfield should open the stations in
its area, the study recommended.
It also recommended that the
county health unit continue
monitoring of bathing sites, both on
the lakefront beaches and inland as a
way of keeping track of bacterial'
concentrations.
There is not enough information
available on septic tanks — their
location, age, type — to monitor their
effects. A program of inspection and
renewal would also be advisable, the
report said.
It also suggested it would be
beneficial to have an annual record of
installation of tile drains at each
farm, manure and waste handling
practices, fertilizer use, areas of crop
types as a way of tracking changes
and relating them to changes in water
quality.
The report recommended studies
to target "hot" areas of pollution to
find their causes.°

The blade anchors the unit to
the ground preventing the
tractor from slipping backward
and takes the strain off the
tractor. The cable is easy to
pull out as the winch drum
free wheels easily.
The winch is operated
with a control rope from a
safe position on either
side of the unit.
The 3 -point linkage is
raised so the logs are 1-2
feet off the ground and the
logs are skidded to the
landing.
