Changing times, changing concerns
Has anyone else out there noticed
that the degree of worrying is rising?
We've all worried about the
common things since God banished
Adam and Eve from the Perfect
Place, and with
justification.
Will there be
enough rain to
grow crops?
Will there be
enough money
left over after
the mortgage
payment to pay
the hydro bill?
Will our
children grow
to be the people
we envisioned
from the first
time we held
them? Will chemotherapy be in my
future? Will my spouse stay beside
me through the valleys as well as the
plateaus? We expect to worry about
these things, but not some of the
worries that are popping up now, and
frankly, giving me nightmares in
technicolour.
Monsters dance in my head every
time I see another article about the
advancement of genetically -altered
seeds. It makes it worse to find out
I've been eating these scientific
experiments and didn't know it.
There are 31 genetically altered
plants on the shelves of Canadian
supermarkets, including tomatoes,
wheat, cor'h, soybeans and potatoes.
They aren't labelled as such and
someone forgot to tell me about
them. I have now started checking
under my armpits for the appearance
of an additional eye. It worries me.
The terminator gene in seeds gives
me chills. My unscientific mind can't
assimilate why we need such a thing
and the fact that it is sterile sounds
off alarm bells. Of course it won't
affect you, you dummy, I am told by
the more learned — but I'm smart
enough to remember thalidomide,
DDT and Ag&nt Orange. They were
safe too! Super Wrench used to joke
about the milk they didn't drink on
Fridays in college before going home
for the weekend. It was to render
them safe and docile for their
weekend dates. I know from
experience it didn't work all that
well. Now, with the sterility gene
available, think of what we could do
with a box of Rice Krispies? I worry
about that a lot.
Cloning, especially the successful
sheep, Dolly, makes me pray for
mankind on a daily basis. The
possibilities here are horrendous. To
me, it is as wonderful as the nuclear
bomb. I'm past the worry stage' on
this one — it gives me panic attacks.
There are other worries that I
never thought we'd have. Will I get a
virus in my computer. Fifteen years
ago I never gave a thought to owning
a computer, I was worrying about
whether or not we should invest in an
answering machine for the phone.
Silly me! It hasn't harmed me one bit,
except when it didn't work or people
were afraid to leave a message. In all,
it was more annoying than anything
else.
My worrying isn't over yet. We
live within spitting distance of a
facility that has been designated to
burn a perfectly safe substance,
known as plutonium. It is supposedly
coming from America and Russia and
it is so safe they don't want to do it
there. At Bruce Nuclear it will be
perfectly safe. I'm worrying that I
will need to check more than under
my armpits when this experiment
gets underway. Worrying could
become my full-time occupation.0
