The Rural Voice, 1999-04, Page 59Tthink of it as a narrow triangle since the three sides no longer have an equal influence on disease potential. Over-use of any one crop will increase disease pressure. By rotating, you minimize your potential for serious disease outbreaks since each crop is resistant to the diseases of the previous year's crop. So take full advantage of this very effective management tool and ROTATE! ROTATE! ROTATE! You won't be sorry !O • Advice Groundwater nitrates — vacuums from above By Todd Leuty Agroforestry Advisor Most of us know that excessive groundwater nitrate levels due to leaching or runoff from agriculture is not a good thing. Trees and other deep-rooted plants can help reduce the excessive nitrate problem where it appears in groundwater. Just like all agricultural crops we know that trees also need nitrogen to survive. The windbreaks you establish around your best farm fields or the sheltering trees you have around the pasture, your house and barns provide the usual wind management benefits. The same trees will also be sucking up excessive nitrates from deeper soils. Tree roots help "use up" nitrogen fertilizers that get past your crop roots. The trees will be providing a nitrate absorption service to you throughout the season, fastest in spring and early summer. slowest in late fall and winter Tree roots grow deeper dow n than crop roots. Among all tree species root growth patterns can be quite different. Trees such as poplar and spruce have shallow roots. Other trees have deeper, wide -spreading roots like sugar maple, fruit trees and ash. Trees like red oak have very deep "tap" roots. Trees also have • preferences for the site they grow on. Poplar, tamarack, soft maple and Manitoba maple prefer wet soils. Sugar maple, red oak, white ash and pines prefer well -drained drier sites. White spruce and eastern white cedar can grow on moist or drier soils.
