The Rural Voice, 1999-04, Page 41add, everyone was wonderful in their
co-operation.
Not that they weren't nervous.
The day before the cows were due to
be moved back home, the building
was in chaos as different trades
scurried about getting the final pieces
in place. There was no hot water, for
instance, to wash out the milking
equipment. On the day of the move,
however, everything came together
by 2:00 p.m., before the cows
arrived, for their 6:00 p.m. evening
milking.
The supplier of the milking
equipment had extra staff on hand to
help with the milking for the first
couple of days. The cows, however,
were already trained to a parlour set
up and aside from a little curiousity
about their new surroundings, they
went smoothly through the parlour.
Had they come straight from the old
tie -stall barn it would likely have
been much more difficult, Steve says.
MIlk production has been up
in the new barn but it's hard
to know where the credit
lies, Steve says. At the same time
they moved into the new barn they
also adopted big bale haylage+and dry
grain corn into their Total Mix
12 tie stalls allow
special attention
for needy cows
Ration so that may account for some
or all of the improvement.
Steve says the 12 tie stalls they
included in the set up are a great
addition. Though cows in the stalls
still get TMR, the ration can be top -
dressed to supplement their diet and
the cows don't have to compete for
feed. "You can give a little bit of
individual attention you can't give
out in the big group," he says.
They're also keeping their options
open about possibly selling breeding
stock and if there is a buyer coming
they can have the cows up front
where they are easily viewed.
And there will likely be lots of
people viewing the barn. As well as
the steady trickle of visitors from
across the country there will be an
open house on Saturday, May 8 from
10.a.m. to 3 p.m..0-
