September. Site preparation came
first. They constructed a new 90 -foot
diameter liquid manure tank, set 10
feet into the ground. The soil
excavated helped build up the site for
the barn.
Next the contractor arrived to bore
holes for the footings for the
structure. Erection of the metal
skeleton for the shelter took about
two weeks. Then it was time to put
on the covering. •
The tarpaulin -style roof is
generally put up in the early morning
or late evening when the wind is low,
Steve says. Since it was so later in
the year morning was more viable.
They called in friends ("You really
(earn who your friends are," Karen
jokes), mostly former dairy farmers
because the dairy farmers were still
busy with milking at that time of the
morning.

The Dolsons chose to put in a
rigid -construction, steel -covered end
wall on the smaller shelter where the
parlour is located. You have to have
an insulated area for the parlour
anyway, Karen noted. They hired a
local builder to do that work to the
specifications of the shelter supplier.
One of the things about building a
shelter, says Steve, is that you end up
being your own general contractor.
You have to work with the subtrades
installing drainage, pouring concrete,
putting in wiring and plumbing as
well as alley cleaners and milking
equipment.
"You're responsible for your own
mistakes," Karen says. Still, they
