have 12 tie -stalls where cows
generally go after calving or where
they can keep cows that aren't doing
well and need extra attention with
their rations. In total the barn will
hold 80 cattle.
Expansion was the big reason
for the move. The couple
started farming at their current
location in 1985 and set production
goals for their 34 -head tie -stall
operation. By 1995 they had met
most of those goals and began
looking at doubling the herd and
moving to a free -stall operation.
"We wanted to do something to
make it easier," Karen says. "The tie -
stall barn took too much labour."
As well, Steve recalls, one year
they had 32 heifer calves born and
had the potential to increase the herd
economically.
When they got quotes on conven-
tional barns, the plans went on hold.
For a few years they operated a
joint -venture with another producer,
milking their cows in his free -stall
setup but it was miles away and it
proved inconvenient. By last summer
they were looking at a way to bring
