Look at more than price alone, the CFBA suggests. While price will play an important role in your choice of a builder, it should be considered in terms of the project as a whole because the lowest price doesn't necessarily indicate the best proposal. Compare and carefully evaluate project designs and specifications. The same attention should be given to bracing techniques, snow loading, steel packages and all other aspects of the projects. Be specific in your require- ments and follow up to ensure the contract you sign details every- thing included in the quoted price. Before committing yourself to a project, it's important to deter- mine if your builder's employees are covered by workers' com- pensation. Also ask your builder if he has liability insurance. Insuran- ce not only gives you legal prot- ection but safeguards your investment. When possible you should visit the last two jobs completed by the builder you're considering. If one of the jobs is the same type of building you require, it should give you a clear indication of what to expect. If time restraints and location prevent you from visiting the sites, you can always ask around to determine if the builder has a respected reputation. Finally, check to see if he offers a guarantee of his work.0 For more information contact: Canadian Farm Builders Association, c/o Bullfrog Postal Outlet, P.O.
