Gaining credit in the relationship bank
As the birds tlock back to capture
that, early worm, it's decision time for
farmers. Should we plant beans, corn
or muckets? Maybe the land should
be rented out this year and let
someone else
worry about
prices and
rainfall?
Should we take
out crop
insurance or go
to Casino Rama
and at least
have fun losing
money? Should
we hire extra
help we can't
afford or have a
coronary while
working 16
hours and let
the neighbours finish the cropping?
Somewhere between all these random
thoughts racing through your mind,
you decide on a balance both you and
your bank account can live with. That
isn't the only balance you should be
stewing about ... there's a more
important one. In what kind of shape
is your personal balance?
At a recent seminar, the keynote
speaker had an interesting analogy
about spousal partnerships. He
compared the relationship to a bank
account. The more deposits you make
into your account, the healthier your
balance. Withdrawals therefore,
weaken both the balance in the bank
account, ditto for the relationship.

2 THE RURAL VOICE
were husband/wife working
partnerships of which the profession
of farming tops the "dynamic duo"
list.
Springtime amid the furrows
requires that both spouses make a lot
of deposits in their working
relationship and keep withdrawals to
minimum to avoid marital discord. A
deposit for the man would be seeing
that there is a lawn mower that
actually works ready by the first of
May. Cultivating the garden before '
you have to be threatened is a major
deposit. The interest on these kinds of
deposits could earn you a pleasant
surprise. Maybe some evening as you
are dragging your buns from the field
dreading the choring ahead, you
might find the chores already
finished. You can't beat that kind of
interest.
Wives can make many deposits in
their relationship banks at this time.
Make meals that can be reheated at
least four times and are still
recognizable as edible products. A
major deposit is taking that meal out
to the hungry operator and taking ice
water along. You might earn interest
right on the spot.
Major interest can be earned by
postponement at this time. Shelve any
ideas about home renovations, having
an arbour built, going to the opera or
asking him to finish the fountain he
started in the flowerbed last year.
Waiting for the right time pays big
dividends.
What I would call a major
depositor came to the shop this week.
He was looking for a hopper bin off.a
combine so he could put bulk feed in
it and therefore save having his wife
slug bags. The man will never know
how close he came to being kissed in
gratitude. Right after he left, Super
Wrench ordered parts for the riding
lawn mower. I'II kiss him right after I
actually see it running. If the garden
gets done without a whine or a nag
from me, he'll have that much
interest, he won't know what to do
with it.0
