things that Carol misses since selling
their retail business in Zurich. Carol
had opened the business back in 1988
when Kevin graduated from
Ridgetown College and returned to
the farm. As well as having her own
growing interest in floral designs, she
realized Kevin needed room to grow
into the business.
"I knew if Kevin was going to be
really involved it would be very
difficult for him to find his own
spot," she recalls.
When Kevin and Lorraine
married, Lorraine joined the shop as
well. They sold the business to a
former employee in 1996 and both
women moved back to help with the
expanding greenhouse operation. By

then, Carol says, Kevin was well
established in the family business.
Spring also brings a return of the
seasonal staff (they have one year-
round employee and another 10 who
work in the busy spring and summer
seasons). Many of these people come
back year after year, she says.
While one of the delights of
working in the greenhouse is
laughing at wintery blasts, sometimes
the weather gets the last laugh. The
most recent occasion was last fall
when, Carol says, a wind storm
"gave us a Remembrance Day we
will never forget".
