The Rural Voice, 1999-03, Page 21ROPS CAN SAVE
LIVES
Tractors are the number one killer in
the farm workplace. Rollovers
account for about half of fatal tractor
accidents and are responsible for
many disabling injuries.
The majority of deaths in these
overturn accidents would not have
happened if the tractors had been
equipped with rollover protective
structures. (ROPS)
ROPS are available as protective steel
frames, or quiet, dust -proof cabs.
Many manufactures offer retrofit ROPS
for most of their older models. When
you purchase a ROPS make sure it
meets performance criteria
established by the Canadian
Standards Association.
A homemade ROPS is not
recommended.
Practise Sun Safety
Hard to believe, but we'll soon be worrying about __
getting too much sun!
The sun's damaging ultraviolet rays are invisible.
Their effects can be seen in sunburns and premature
aging of the skin.
Ultraviolet rays can also contribute to skin cancer and
cataracts of the eyes. ,
Most farm workers have to spend a lot of time in the
sun. To minimize exposure to the sun's ultraviolet 4
t ' v
rays:
• Clothing should protect as much of your skin
as possible.
• Wear a hat with a wide brim or a
neck protection.
• Put on UV protection sunglasses or
safety eyewear.
• Use a sunscreen with SPFI5 or
higher and
UVA/UVB protection.
• Take breaks indoors or in shady
areas, such as under trees or
umbrellas.
