The Rural Voice, 1999-02, Page 31a huge amount in getting state of the
art equipment to provide the best
white beans for their customers.
Ontario probably has the biggest
concentration of quality processing
plants in the world, says Huzevka.
To keep that industry going Ontario
should have about 100,000 acres of
beans, he says.
Ford points out that arty one of the
three major players in the Ontario
bean market could easily handle all
the beans grown in Ontario last year.
"We're sitting with a minimum of
three times the capacity needed," he
says.
Even the Bean Board itself has
suffered because of the
reduction in acreage.
Beginning March 1 of last year, staff
at the board was cut back to four
days a week and directors and
committee members had their per
diem reduced by 20 per cent. There's
no immediate threat to the future of
"Qur . ustomers soy_,

the board, Huzevka says, because it
has a $778,000 surplus and annual
operating costs are under $550,000
but "The board is not geared to
operate on 35,000 acres. The services
we provide to producers we can't
finance on 35,000 acres."
Larry Anderson, Bean Board
president expressed his concern for
the industry at the Brodhagen
meeting. "We still have a quality
bean industry here," he said, "Let's
keep it here."
Survival of the Ontario industry
would apparently keep packagers and
canners happy too.
"Our customers say Ontario
produces the best beans in the
world," Thompson told District 3
producers.
Like most industries, white bean
canners and packagers have seen a
tremendous consolidation over the
years. Twenty years ago there were
13 or 14 bean canners in Britain
alone but today seven major canning
companies constitute 80 per cent of
the world demand for beans.
