The Rural Voice, 1999-02, Page 21received the Centennial Medal and
Canada 125 Award.
The church has always been a
very important part of the Saunders'
lives and they express strong feelings
about traditional family values.
Bessie points out that Marsh has
never worked on Sunday, except of
course, for the necessary chores.
Marshall's community
involvement began as a
warden at the church and as
trustee of the local school. In 1974 he
was elected to the Euphrasia
Township Council and served the
township for 14 years, eight of those
as Reeve. His quiet, non -
confrontational leadership style
enabled Marshall to keep things
running smoothly and get the job
done. He was able to avoid
controversy yet make the decisions
necessary to deal with township
business.
Through his position as Reeve,
Marshall scrvcd on many committees
requiring him to be away from home
many evenings and several days a
month. He also served 12 years on
the Meaford hospital board
representing the rural areas. They are
both Directors of the Grey County
Historical Society and are active
members of the Walter's Falls
Scniors Club.
Marshall and Bessie had very
busy schedules so they shared the
farm duties, making sure someone
was always home for the chores.
They have eased out of their direct
farming activities but are still busy
with their many interests.
Their family and friends gathered
recently in Rocklyn for the annual
dinner of the Euphrasia Township
Federation of Agriculture. Bessie and
Marsh are both quiet, modest
individuals who are reluctant to
elaborate on their many
accomplishments, however their
colleagues did not hesitate to praise
the Saunders for their community
leadership. Mayor Don McCausland
and Bob Brassington, Regional
Director of the OFA, presented
Marshall and Bessie Saunders with
the Agricultural Heritage Award and
commended them on their
outstanding contributions to
agriculture and the rural community
for more than half a century.0
