"Sec those two guys over there?"
asked Dave Winston the other
morning. "If the fittest survive,
which one of them is the fittest?"
Now this was a strange question
to ask so we all figured there was a
hook in
the bait
some-
place. We
knew the
guys. Al
Nichol,
the wiry
little guy,
runs
mara-
thons as a
hobby.
His
friend
Mel at Mabel's
Stokes,
who was currently wolfing down a
stack of pancakes for his mid-
morning snack, is known around
town as Whopper after he once won a
contest at the opening of a Burger
King by eating 10 Whoppers in 10
minutes.
So everybody kind of hedged, not
wanting to be the one to state the
obvious and finally Wayne Bruce
decided to bite.
"I'd say Al was the fittest," he
ventured.
"Depends what they're trying to
survive, doesn't it?" Dave said.
"Now if they were being chased by a
bear I grant you Al might tire the
bear our before he got caught and the
bear would snack for a long time on
Whopper. But say they were trapped
on a desert island with no food. I
think skinny little Al would be long
dead before Whopper got down to a
size 50 waist."
"Yeh," said George. "So?"
"So I'm just thinking with hog
prices the way they are, I'm Al," said
Dave. "My operation is pretty lean
and I can produce pigs as cheap as
anybody but it doesn't do me a damn
bit of good if we keep starving for a
long time."
"Gotcha," said Cliff Murray.
