The Rural Voice, 1999-01, Page 62People Richards named acting Ag Rep for Clinton OMFRA OMAFRA pork specialist Douglas Richards has been named acting Agricultural and Rural Representative for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs office at Clinton. Richards, who operated the family swine farm near Brussels after graduating from the University of Guelph in 1980, has been OMAFRA swine advisor in the area for the past three and a half years. He has been appointed as acting Ag Rep for a three- month term, starting November 1. He replaces Bob Humphries who took early retirement. For the past six months Richards has been seconded to Ontario Pork as it looked at reorganizing its structure. Richards has also been a lecturer at Centralia College, a soil conservation advisor for a conservation authority, a facilitator with Ontario Agricultural Training Institute and a counsellor with the Family Farm Advisor Program. He is past president of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists, western branch. He has toured widely in thc United States and Denmark and spent a month in the Ukraine as a volunteer agricultural extension specialist. He currently resides on a farm in the north end of Middlesex County with his wife Jane Sadler Richards and their three children. Though the appointment is temporary, Richards is expected to be named Ag Rep early in the new year once the retirement of Humphries becomes official.° 1 Doug Richards Acting Ag Rep in Huron Christina DeWit named Murray Cardiff Award winner Christina DeWit of R.R.1, Ethel accepts the Murray Cardiff Citizenship Award from Mr. Cardiff at the annual 1-luron County 4-11 Awards Day in Clinton November 22. The top award for 4-11 members in 1luron goes to those members who have shown outstanding involvement in their community. winning "Go For the Gold" team; Rob Vanden Hoven, champion 4-H swine showman, highest score in 4-H swine club; Tim Devereaux, highest score for 4-H Sodbusters Club and highest total points at the International Plowing Match; Becky Rodges, reserve champion showman and exhibitor of 12 the champion 4-H gilt at Seaforth Fall F• air and member of the top team in the • judging competition; and Corey z • Rintoul champion sweepstakes o showman and Stan Jackson Award ▪ winner for showing the grand 5 champion beef steer at the Seaforth co Fall Fair.O • Western Ontario Et takes several top lamb prizes Christina DeWit of R.R.1, Ethel was the 1998 winner of the Murray Cardiff Citizenship Award at thc Huron County 4-11 Awards Day in Clinton, November 22. Other nominees for the award included Heather Becker, Rob Vanden Hoven, James McNaughton, Katie McNeil, Hannah Huizinga and Sarah McLellan. Multiple award winners included: Laurie Rodges who won awards as champion 4-H sheep showman, Lop senior judge at the judging competition and as a member of the winning team in the judging competition and the Western Ontario sheep breeders took several of the top awards for market Iambs at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto this year. Dan Emke of Walkerton had the Reserve Champion, selling for $8.75 per pound. Fifth place market lamb was exhibited by Lee and Lila Rintoul of Lucknow and sold for $10 a pound to Dave Carson of Listowel.°
