The Rural Voice, 1999-01, Page 19customers have bccn warned they face a wait of a month to get their pork. Although the orders have been divided up between abattoirs in Owen Sound, Markdale, Hanover and Kincardine, they're still unable to keep up with the additional demand on top of their regular customers. Faced with losing money even on the pigs they sell, many pork producers have decided they might as well help the poor. In a much -publicized move, more than 300 hogs wcrc assembled at Rodney and Denfield assembly yards, processed by Quality Meat Packers and Maple Leaf Meats and distributed to the Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto. In the heart of pork country the Perth County Pork Producers Association announced a "Hunger Relief by Perth Pork Producer;" program under which a pork producer can take a pig to a local abattoir and designate the meat as a donation to the local food bank. The program is modeled on the Huron Hunger Alliance instituted 16 months earlier. Meanwhile the Bruce County Federation of Agriculture is trying to raise money from donations to buy pork for local foodbanks. The Federation will act as a recipient of donations from businesses and individuals and whcn they get enough money will order a pig which will be processed and given to the Salvation Army. Prior to the announcement of help from both levels of government, some farmers were worried they might need foodbank services themselves to get through the cash - crunch brought on by the price collapse. With the pre -Christmas announcement many wcrc able to relax a little, even though details of the programs weren't immediately available and it seems it will he months before they'll actually get a payout— in the case of the federal program, after they've filed income tax returns to 1998. Farm leaders hope, however, that with the promise that money is coming suppliers and banks will be encouraged to continue to support their clients until the money comes in.0 PACIFIC WESTERN OUTDOOR FURNACES • Safe • Economical • Convenient • Insurable 97.2% EFFICIENCY • Wood fired hot water furnaces • Unique round design fire box 3'to4' wood uses 2' wood 99% SMOKELESS • Converts wood to gas and gas to heat • Reduced smoke, emissions and ash Gerald Saunders Russell Miners RR #5, Woodstock N4S 7V9 Kemble NOH 1 SO (Owen Sound) (519) 467-5441 (519) 376-7907 JANUARY 1999 15 tirff'"-----..
