John Green at Green's Meat Markct and Abattoir in Wingham says he has a price formula for his processing and so has dropped his prices to reflect the chcaper faun price. He's been selling pigs, cut, wrapped and cured, at 77 cents a pound and he's been swamped with orders. "Sales of halves and whole pigs have gone silly," he said. Green said he is usually behind in thc prc-Christmas period but usually mostly in custom orders. This ycar he is four to five weeks behind in freezer orders of half and whole pigs through his own store — a backlog of 150 pigs sold that he can't get processed despite the fact he has added staff and is working his staff overtime. On one day alone he took ordcrs for 17 pigs and finally took the phone off thc hook so he could get some work done on orders already received. Many producers are also crowding the local abattoirs as they sell pigs to their neighbours. While Green is happy to help out he worries about the plight of the farmers. "It's a lot nicer to do business with somebody who is making money," he said. In an innovative move to help local producers Bluewater Feed Company in Tara has become an agent bringing consumers and producers together, giving cheaper pork for consumers and higher returns to farmers. Consumers can order whole pigs for their freezer at 65 cents a pound, dressed weight, plus another 550-575 a pig for cutting and wrapping (depending on how much curing they want). Each order is accompanied by a 5100 deposit which goes immediately to the farmer supplying the pigs. "It's been overwhelming," said Jim Roth, manager of the Tara warehouse store, of the response to the program. In the four days after the story first appeared in the Owen Sound Sun - Times, 100 pigs had been ordered. After a story appeared in the Toronto Star, the phone started ringing with orders from the city as well. Staff have been kept hopping keeping up with the calls. There were so many orders that
