2 THE RURAL VOICE
Gisele Ireland
Hold on to the good things
The major challenge for me in
1999 is to convince Super Wrench
that when he gives me something I
really want, I want to keep it. He tries
to convince me othem ise.
It took 30
years to collect
the old wheels
that lean on the
rail fence of my
flower borders
and it has been
an ongoing
battle to keep
them there.
Every time
someone drives
in and makes a
lucrative offer
to Super
Wrench to buy,
one, a few, or all of them, I ha\e to
tell him in no uncertain terms what he
can do with his offer. I like them and
want to keep them. His assurances
that he can buy more and better ones
with the profit he'll make on them
forces me to be deaf in both ears.
That doesn't seem to stop him from
trying to convince me otherwise.
My prairie grain wagons came
under siege just weeks after he got
them for me. I was just getting ready
to plant one of them with pink
petunias after arduous hours of
restoration when a predator drove in.
His wife always wanted one and he
offered an outrageous sum for the
one I was working on, and a little less
for the one that was still pretty rough.
Super Wrench thought it was a
helluva deal and came over to begin
the "I'll get you more and better
ones" routine. I made like a mule and
dug my heels in. The result was two
disgruntled men and one happy
petunia planter.
The copper boiler we recently
acquired is under heavy guard. As
soon as I saw the blackened, dented
container at a sale I envisioned it
gracing my living room, filled with
dried flowers from my garden. Super
Wrench got it for me, and I thanked
him as a good wife should.
After a lot of scrubbing it came up
just as beautiful as I knew it would. I
took it to our local florist to have the
arrangement done. Then the problem
arose. A predator saw it in the shop
and made the florist an offer she
couldn't wait to pass on to me. I
hadn't taken my medication yet, or I
would have known better than to pass
the information to the Wrench to use
as a weapon against my
possessiveness. He worked on me for
days, offering me an endless array of
old containers with the money I could
realize from this one. Trouble is, I
really liked this one and refused to
budge. The boiler looks gorgeous in
my living room and Super Wrench
scowls at it on a regular basis.
My next project is the obtaining,
fixing up and, more importantly,
keeping of an old seed drill. It will be
outstanding in my yard, covered with
a flowering vine. I'm sure a predator
will fall in love with it and
proposition Super Wrench. Super
Wrench will butt his head against the
immovable force and hopefully lose.
I know he will take shameful
advantage of any signs of weakening
or indecision on my part.
May there be lots of treasures for
you in 1999 and may you get to keep
them. I know I'm going to do my best
to thwart the Wrench in giving up my
treasures. He should really be
grateful, I've never succumbed to the
offers I've had for him. Happy New
Year.O
