In 1965, Eldon said the average cost per tonne of feed was close to $65. Today the same feed costs well over $200, at one time reaching as high as $300. The Vines don't grow any of their own feed. Their birds are fed a prepared fccd of corn, wheat and soybean. The Vines learned quickly the money was no longer in live birds, and was now in processed meat products. In an attempt to increase their profit margins on the farm, Ruth and Eldon decided to open a small processing plant and retail store on their farm. It was at a time, in the mid -80s, when the Ministry of Agriculture was promoting on-farm sales and processing as a way of increasing farm income.
