In the late '50s, feed company owners were encouraging farmers to produce turkeys. As a result too many farmers got into the business and flooded the market with over production. Low prices prompted the federal government to create the Canadian Turkey Marketing Agency and a quota system for turkeys. The Vines are thankful for the quota system. It was the federal system, along with their on-farm processing and retail business, that saved them during the lean years. But Vines says it is too difficult to make any money raising the birds any more. "There just isn't the money there used to be in the live ones and I'm getting over the hill," said Eldon. When Eldon compares today's feed prices from those 30 years ago, he says it is next to impossible for a turkey farmer to make any money.
