Advice
Most years we have adequate snow
cover but this is always a threat.
Using this method you at least know
that you have a healthy root system
for the plant as there will be very
little growth in October.
Alfalfa, like any other crop, can
withstand one or two stresses but will
start to have difficulty if there are too
many stresses. Remember that your
crop has been drought stressed at
least some part of this year.
Fertilizing the stand will help to
strengthen the plant so that it will
withstand the winter. This should be
applied as early as possible so that
the nutrients can be taken up into the
plant and used within the root. If you
are working the crop by taking two or
three cuts and because of the drought
stress experienced, fertilizing fields
should be done this year. A rate of
1:3 or 1:4 of phosphorus to potash
should be applied.0
So you want to start
a business?
By Marlene Evans
Administrative Assistant
Markdale OMAFRA
There has never been a better time
to start a new business with all the
information out there, including
books, brochures, courses,
audio/video cassettes, that tell you
step by step how to start up your own
business. There is definitely no
shortage of technology either, with
the lap -top computer, voice mail, cell
phones, email, interne[, fax machines.
So it's simple, right? Not quite.
The startup of a business is the
easy part ... making it a success and
keeping it successful is not so easy.
There are all kinds of questions that
someone will have when starting up a
business. What kind of business
should I start; how do I market my
product; do I need a business plan,
where can 1 get financing; what about
GST, PST; do I need to register my
business, if so, where do I go?
At the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs,
we are committed to helping
Ontario's rural business people get
the answers they need to improve the
development and growth of viable
businesses in their communities.0
