Drought plagues Ontario In many counties reports are coming in regarding very acute circumstances: • farmers are being forced to cull their livestock herds due to feed shortage • cattle are being fed from winter supplies because there is no pasture land • ponds and water wells are at dangerously low levels The Ontario Federation of Agriculture is asking all farmers Of Interest?? — It has been brought to our attention at the Huron Federation office that some Huron County OFA members do not have OFA signs. If you do not have an OFA sign (or have a laded one) and would like one please call our office at 1-800-511-1135 or 482-9642 and a sign will be delivered to you. Due to the shortage of rainfall in this area of the province, farmers with crop insurance should be contacting Agricorp now with their concerns of lower crop yields. It's especially important to contact them if you are making harvesting decisions based on the lower expected yields, such as cutting corn for silage that would have usually gone for grain production. You can contact Agricorp by calling their Customer Action Centre at 1-888- 247-4999, their hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. FARM HIKER TOUR '98 The 1998 Farm Hiker Tour promoting agriculture will visit dairy, sheep, beef, swine, emu, quarter horse, market gardening, and dairy producing operations on Sunday, October 4, 1998. The farms will be open from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. Tour maps will be available at Seaforth Agriplex next to Community Centre from12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. Bring an item of non-perishable food for food bank, a cooler to purchase products along the way, binoculars to enjoy sights at Hullett Wildlife Area, and please leave pets at home! Conclude the day with a Country Harvest Supper at Seaforth Agriplex from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets for the meal are $8, adults; $5, children 5-12; four an under, free.
