product. One complaint in recent
years is the commercial area's
expansion into the rest of the show.
To address this complaint, Craig said
the area will be at one side of the
show to give visitors the choice to
visit it.
Another difference at Huron
Shines '99 IPM is the extensive
Machines in Motion demonstration.
In light of the new millennium
approaching, John Becker, chair of
the Machines in Motion committee,
decided to have a look back at the
last 99 years in farming and farm
machinery.
The program will consist of three
phases. The first will look at the early
1900s when the plowing match
started. The fields will be plowed
with horse drawn equipment like a
walking plow and a corn binder.
The second phase will look at
machinery from 40 years later, in the
'50s and '60s. All the equipment
from this era was tractor drawn, such
as a pull -type swather. And the third
phase will look at today's modern
equipment including GPS, manure
management and sprayer
demonstrations.
In order to accommodate the
demonstrations, over 300 acres of
crops will be planted next spring,
including 120 acres of soybeans, 175
acres of wheat, 50 acres of corn, 10
acres of spring wheat. One hundred
acres of hay was planted this year in
preparation.
Becker said Huron's IPM will be
the first year a match has used
antique equipment in their Machines
in Motion demonstrations. The
machine demonstrations aren't
common, this year's IPM won't have
a Machines in Motion display.
"We want the grandparents to
come out and remember the
equipment they used to farm," said
Becker. He's also interested in the
younger generation.
"If we can educate these kids
about the old farming ways then
they'll really appreciate where their
food comes from."
Becker is trying to encourage farm
dealers in the county to bring their
old equipment out to the show so
people can look at the progress the
machines have made.
There will be more to look at
aside from fields of crops and farm
