44 THE RURAL VOICE
Choosing a location for the match
isn't an easy task. It is one of the
most important decisions to be made
preparation for the event. A
property big enough to accommodate
a tented city, trailer park, plowed
fields and parking for thousands of
visitors must be found.
Don Dodds, land use co-ordinator
for the Huron IPM and his wife,
Maja, spent the winter two years ago
travelling around Huron County
talking to farmers trying to find those
who were interested in donating land
for next year's IPM.
"The farmers have been great.
They have been excellent to work
with," said Dodds.
With six possible sites for the
match, Dodds then went back to the
Ontario Plowman's Association and
left the final decision of where the
match will be held up to them. The
OPA decided on the Becker farm.
The Huron IPM committee has
options on 2,700 acres in Hay
Township and has leased 1,650 acres.
Of that land, 400 acres will be set
aside for plowing fields, 200 for
Machines in Motion, 100 acres for a
trailer park with 600 serviced sites
and 600 non -serviced sites, five acres
for a tractor park where competitors
can park their tractors and plows, 15
acres for the antique tractor
committee, 400 acres for parking and
50-100 acres set aside for the
Canadian Plowing Competition that
will be held prior to the IPM.
Dodds said they expect close to
100 plowmen from across the
province and 50 plowmen in the
antique plowing competition.
In recent years Dodds said he has
gotten away from plowing but he
said once plowing gets into your
blood it's hard to get it out. It must
also run in the blood, because Dodds'
son Paul now plows and will be
competing at this year's IPM.
Dodds will be part of the Huron
IPM committee going to this year's
IPM near Kingston. The committee
will have to gather equipment
including 2,000 stakes for staking
plowing fields and material for
putting the tented city together.
Graeme Craig, chair of the 1999
International Plowing Match
committee said organization for next
year's plowing match in Huron
County is on track.
