One of the exemptions is for farm
workers involved in the production
of food products.
Public holidays

Act Ontario has eight paid public
holidays. New Year's Day, Good

Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day,
Christmas Day, and December 26

earned wages at least 12 days in the
four-week period before the holiday

Planning your estate
requires care,
communications
By Dael Bierworth

My kids used to have an
expression when they did not agree
with a statement. After hearing a
comment they would pronounce a
loud "not". The same word would be
heard if I stated that estate planning
was easy.
Estate planning is not an easy
process. It involves all you have
worked for in your life and perhaps
some of what your parents have left
to you. These strong tics arc then
affected by the feelings and different
viewpoints of the people in this
world you care the most about —
your family.
The process also involves
complicated taxation and legal
considerations that you have not had
the opportunity to work with in the
past.
Estate planning is not something
to be accomplished in a few days.
Some plans may take several years to
finalize. In the course of your
deciding, difficult issues may arise
from objectives from different family
members that may cause potential
conflict. Another concern is that
situations change as circumstances
arise. Don't be surprised when these
obstacles arise. Keep in mind your
goal of doing your best to transfer
your estate in as "fair" a manner as
possible. The satisfaction of knowing
you have done your best to meet the
needs, goals and wishes of all family
members, is a commendable and
challenging task.
Communication is a vital clement
in the process.
Discussions may start with your
spouse, then involve professional
advisors and progress to the farm
child and spouse and ultimately
involve the other children. The
measure of a successful plan is how
well it is understood by all children.
They must understand, it is your
assets and your estate — the plan
reflects your wish on how assets will
be dispersed.
The following is a short list of the
steps that are usually followed in a
successful estate plan.
1) Collect Data — financial, personal
and legal
2) Review the critical issues —
ownership, control, security, on-farm
living and equal versus fair treatment
of children
3) Set your goals
4) Become familiar with estate
planning tools — tax issues and tools,
business arrangements, life interests,
will planning and life insurance.
