upgraded to a four-way vaccination
program to provide BRSV coverage
and castration and dchorning is
strongly suggested."
The Ontario Stockyards,
Cookstown will continue to offer a
totally vaccinated calf sale. Wayne
Small, co-owner says "a larger
percentage of the cattle are
vaccinated even at regular sales, and
the difference in price is significant.
There arc also requests every week
for 'vaccinates' by buyers. It's
dollars in sellers' pockets!"
The Simcoc-Dufferin Sale
committee which holds its calf sale at
the Stockyards introduced mandatory
dehorriing last year and will be
sticking to that for 1998. Dchorning
means removing horns by a method
that will not allow re -growth of the
horn. Topping the horn is not
acceptable.
Properly castrated calves is also
an issue they have addressed. All
calves must be castrated at least one
month prior to sale. If calves are
castrated between one and two
months prior to sale the only
acceptable method is to cut them
with a knife.
The committee sticks to their rules
too. A producer's total consignment
is rejected from their special sale,
even if only one animal is improperly
done.
Other value-added programs that
came into the marketing game last
year were the Ontario Premium
Added Cattle (OPAC) and Add
Value (AD-VAL). OPAC which is
spearheaded by Dr. Ken Bridge of
Ripley is the only vet -certified
program. It includes mandatory three
week weaning and guarantees heifer
calves open. Any producer and vet
clinic are able to participate, and at
this time no special sales have been
organized.
AD-VAL offered by the Ontario
Livestock Exchange Inc. and B & M
Stockers and Feeders got a late start
in the marketing race last fall.
However, Brian Yost who helps
manage the program says about 2000
AD-VAL stockers have been sold at
their special stocker sales this spring.
AD-VAL includes mandatory
vaccination, castration, dehorning
and a recognized car tag. One
