Reflective Tape on farm equipment The Perth County Federation of Agriculture sent the following resolution to the OFA board of directors. "Be it Resolved that the Ontario Federation of Agriculture support the Oxford North District Women's Institute resolution and lobby the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to enact legislation requiring the installation of reflective tape on the sides and rear of any and all farm and horse drawn vehicles and equipment accessing roads in Ontario after dusk to increase farm equipment visibility." This resolution passed at the OFA directors meeting in March and has been passed on to the Ministry of Transportation working group which is addressing regulatory changes to lighting and marking of farm implements. We encourage all farmers during this busy planting season to check to see that their equipment is properly marked if they are travelling on the roads.0 Pesticide residues well within safety limits A two-year study, recently released by the Canadian Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute found that 70 to 75 per cent of the fruits and vegetables sold in Canada have no detectable pesticide residues and the rest fall so well below the established safety limits that they pose no cause for concern. The two cancer groups funded a scientific panel to determine if they should be attacking pesticides as a cancer risk. The Report of a Panel on the Relationship Between Public Exposure to Pesticides and Cancer covers both Canadian and imported produce. The study found that poor diet (one high in fat, low in fibre, or missing nutrients from fruits and vegetables) not pesticides in food, was the real food -related risk for cancer. (Sources: Ottawa Citizen, At Guelph). In related news, a study published in the New England Journal of PERTH COUNTY FEDERATION OF AGRICULTURE THERE WILL BE NO DIRECTORS' MEETING IN MAY 58 THE RURAL VOICE Medicine October 30, 1997 presents evidence that pesticides do not cause breast cancer. The study reports that level of exposure did not translate into higher cancer risks. It found that women with the highest levels of pesticide residues in their blood actually appeared to have a lower risk of breast cancer. The analysis confirms several recent studies but runs counter to claims by environmental and women's groups.0 From Ontario Farm Animal Council Newsletter, Winter 1998 PERTH COUNTY JUNIOR FARMERS present MOTHER'S DAY BRUNCH May 10, 1998 Listowel Agricultural Hall 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. $6.00 per person Children 5 and under Free For more information contact Tanya Terpstra 519-356-2847 PERTH COUNTY JUNIOR FARMERS present FATHER'S DAY BRUNCH June 21, 1998 Sebringville Community Centre 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. S6.00 per person Children 5 and under Free For more information contact Tom Mathieson 519-271-5329
