The Rural Voice, 1998-05, Page 37Despite all the growing pains, Fisher is happy with the new barn and looks forward to a facility that will serve the family for years to come. use liquid manure, it is part of a free -stall system and he's now pleased with it. "I've done just about everything I said I wouldn't do," he says smiling. "We're quite pleased with it," he says of the barn. Now, he says, though he's still happy to work, they can take time for vacations and nights off. If, when he retires, the boys want to get out of farming, the bam is highly saleable, he says. From being mortgage free, the family now has a lot of money to pay back and a lot more cashflow to handle. Still, even if quota disappears eventually, he feels he can now compete with American producers. And the costs, he says, haven't been that much different than a friend who invested in a restaurant franchise. His advice for others making such a big move is to take advantage of the advice that's available and don't get discouraged. You expect everything to work in a new barn but it doesn't, he says. Still, if the Fishers can overcome the problems they've faced, expansion shouldn't be as big a challenge for others.° As Hay Prices Climb... the more you need Sila-Prime!
