different diameter. This small
variation has no effect on tree
growth.
Faught stresses the importance of
staking trees when using the tree
shelters. Otherwise they grow so fast
they can fall over without support.
The stakes need to stay in place for
three or four years, he says.
Use pointed wooden stakes,
square in cross-section. The bottom
20-30 centimetres should be treated
with a water-based wood
preservative to minimize replacement
of the stakes due to rotting and
breakage. The length of the stake is
determined by the length of the
shelter. The top of the stake should
be just below the top of the tube.
To reduce root damage, always
plant trees after the stakes are in the
ground. Using a mallet, the stake
should be driven 20 centimetres into
the ground on the windward side of
the tree spot. On stony soil, use a
crowbar to start the hole.
Plant the tree, then place the tube
over the tree and push it into the
ground to a depth of five centimetres
(two inches). Fasten the tube to the
stake with the two plastic ties that are
attached to the tube. A mesh is
provided to place over the top of the
tube to prevent birds from falling in.
The Tree Pro is an off-white
shelter that also requires staking. It's
made of recycled plastic but is
shipped as flat sheets that must be
rolled into tubes.
The flat plastic sheet is rolled into
a tube with the corrugated surface on
