I do not know what the effect is of bringing air into inside manure storage, but if it is applicable, maybe it is worth trying. There arc farmers who dump a container full of hydrogen peroxide (H202) into the inside manure storage once in a while. It brings a lot of oxygen into the manure and enhances the growth of the good bacteria while it kills the bad bacteria. Hydrogen peroxide is also used instead of antibiotics or chlorine in drinking water for humans as well as for animals. Friendly neighbours If the large livestock operators apply this technology they will avoid possible problems: neighbours will stay friendly! Problems are there to be solved. We don't have to reinvent the wheel. The best and simplest way is to get information from countries which went through a sudden expansion of the livestock industry a few years ago, to see what research they have done and what conclusions they have made. In Holland, farmers who have managed to reduce the exhaust of the ammonia by 90 per cent can recieve a green label from the government and are allowed to expand while others have to reduce their livestock units. Maybe it is better to think twice before deciding to build inside manure storage. Lots to accomplish by applying wisdom • To avoid the loss of rich plant nutrients, saving on chemical fertilizer. • To avoid the risk of poisoning by release of different gases. • Healthier animals through healthier air. • Applying composted manure keeps soil -life intact. • Keeps odour to a minimum, from the barn as well as during the application of the manure on the land. • Keep the neighbours happy. • A healthier environment for everybody, with less acid rain.0 Willems is a retired pork producer ,From Perth West.
