Farmers present nutrition management strategy to rural municipalities

Municipalities Association (ROMA)
conference in Toronto, the Ontario
Farm Environmental Coalition
(OFEC) unveiled its proposals for
dealing with the growing concern over
the handling and storage of
agricultural nutrients, particularly
livestock manure.
"Farmers accept their responsibility
in dealing with environmental issues
and encourage all farmers in the
province to document and implement
nutrient management plans."
This strategy is truly a partmership
approach with farm organizations
working with the Ministry of the
Environment, Ministry of Natural
Resources, Ministry of Agriculture,
Food and Rural Affairs, as well as
municipal planners, ROMA and the
University of Guelph.
This latest strategy for handling
agricultural nutrients is a balanced

Carol Leeming
The new Ontario Federation of Agriculture Central Huron Director is Carol
Leeming. The Central Huron Region covers the townships of McKillop, Hullett,
Tuckersmith and Stanley, and previously was represented by Bill Wallace.
Carol lives on an egg and cash crop farm in Tuckersmith Township with her
husband Bob and daughters Jessie, 5 and Laura, 2.
Carol received her BA and MSc from the University of Guelph focusing on
rural planning, development and community issues. For the past 10 years she
has worked as a planner for the Huron Planning and Development Department
and as a business advisor with the Small Business Resource Centre in Seaford'.
In 1996, she brought a resolution to the OFA Convention regarding
difficulties farm women are having receiving Maternity/Unemployment
Insurance benefits and the need for change/clarification for women farmers who
work full-time off the farm. This issue has received OFA and CFA support,
however, it is still to be settled.
Carol is interested in hearing from HCFA members in order to learn what

Public forums for nutrient
management planning (NMP) will be
held across Ontario to inform
stakeholders about Ontario's NMP
strategy.
Those wishing to make oral
presentations will have an opportunity
to do so from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
on the following dates: Komoka -
February 23; Guelph - February 24;
Brussels (Community Centre or
Legion) - March 3; Peterborough -
March 5; and Alfred - March 6.
Interested local citizens, farmers,
municipal staff, conservation
authorities, MNR staff, local
politicians, government extension
staff and the media are all encouraged
to attend.
