Nyenhuis said he normally ships heavier pigs to a U.S. packer but in one case ended up sending three hogs to Ontario packers instead. There was as much as $48 difference on the three pigs between the price he would have received in the U.S. and what he got in Ontario, he said. This came at a time, he said, when the George Morris Centre report said Ontario packers were disadvantaged compared to their U.S. competition because they are handling lighter hogs. Speaking to the bank's annual Agricultural Outlook Meeting in Chesley, February 11, Ethan Kohn said that even after revising predictions in light of the Asian crisis, economists with the Royal see a growth of 3.2 per cent in 1998, compared to 2.5 per cent in the U.S. Canada's strong growth will come thanks to low inflation, fiscal restraint by governments, export competitiveness, sound corporate balance sheets and, at long last, consumer confidence.
