producers is a valuable expression of
good citizenship.
He urged producers to have a
spirit of openness and foster effective
communications. "It takes a tender
heart and a tough hide to succeed,"
he said.
John Otten and Jody Durand
reported on the Ontario Pork Industry
Marketing Task Force (see Huron
Pork Producers Association story on
page 43 of this issue). John Crowley
reported on the activities of Ontario
Pork over the past year.
John Nyenhuis proposed a
resolution calling on the Ontario
grading grid to be adjusted so pigs
over 95 kg. are not penalized.
Nyenhuis said he normally ships
heavier pigs to a U.S. packer but in
one case ended up sending three hogs
to Ontario packers instead. There was
as much as $48 difference on the
three pigs between the price he
would have received in the U.S. and
what he got in Ontario, he said.
This came at a time, he said, when
the George Morris Centre report said
Ontario packers were disadvantaged
compared to their U.S. competition
because they are handling lighter

said that even after revising
predictions in light of the Asian
crisis, economists with the Royal see
a growth of 3.2 per cent in 1998,
compared to 2.5 per cent in the U.S.
Canada's strong growth will come
thanks to low inflation, fiscal
restraint by governments, export
competitiveness, sound corporate
balance sheets and, at long last,
consumer confidence.
Kohn praised the Bank of Canada
