1 News With the increase in the population of Canadians from countries where sorghum is the major grain, there is a steady demand in Canada. It is also the best known cereal used in Africa for production in malt whiskey and beer. Because the grain does not contain gluten, there's also demand for use in foods for gluten -allergy sufferers. Trials at Delhi showed a yield of 70 bushels to the acre for grain production. The price in Texas, where it is a major crop, is the equivalent of $3.50 (Canadian) a bushel. As a forage crop, sorghum can grow to 15 feet in height. Tests showed a yield of 38 tons per hectare of green fodder with 12 per cent crude protein; acid detergent fibre (ADF) of 38 per cent; neutral detergent fibre (NDF) of 67 per cent and dry matter digestibility of 65 per cent. Columbus also highlighted the small but profitable market for mung beans, used primarily for bean sprouts. With a rapidly growing Chinese population in Canada, this market is expanding. We import the equivalent of 3,500 acres of production each year, he said. Beans are grown in China, hand-picked, and landed in Canada at 30-40 cents a pound. There have also been some mung beans grown in Texas and Oklahoma. The crop is attractive in that it can be grown using similar cropping practices as those for edible beans such as white beans. The beans are planted at one -inch depth in 21 -inch rows. The pods grow on the top of the plant. There are no herbicides registered for use on mung beans. In the U.S. yields have been 1,000-1,200 pounds per acre but trials in Ontario have so far yielded only 500-700 pounds per acre. The beans contain 26 per cent protein and as such are popular with people growing pigeons. But the vast majority are used for bean sprouts where sprouting companies (there are many in downtown Toronto) take 40 cent per pound beans and in the few days of sprouting, increase the return several times over.° "Your Fair Deal Team!
