producers buy bred gilts which are
selected with specific breeding dates
that allow them to fit into the system.
The system requires a
commitment to greater attention to
the details of management; a nursery
facility that can handle some number
of early weaned pigs; a good
understanding and above average
skills in breeding sows; and a high
and consistent farrowing rate.

per year
Kains outlined the advantages and
disadvantages of three different
batching systems: three-week cycle,
four-week weaning with seven
groups of sows; four-week cycle,
three-week weaning with five groups
of sows; and threc-week cycle, three-
week weaning with seven groups of
sows.
The first system is the least
intensive system with a maximum of
8.7 farrowings per crate per year,
turning the crates over every six
weeks. This system has two groups
farrowing at a time and uses two
nurseries where the young pies stay
