for the first time this year. In the
U.S., 750,000 acres of high oil corn
were grown last year and two million
acres are expected to be grown this
year.
High oil corn was creating using a
breeding method called top -crossing.
It has a much larger embryo area
(where most of the oil and protein is)
and much smaller endosperm (where
the starch is) than regular corn.
High oil corn is a way of
increasing the amount of crude
protein and increasing the quality of
protein in a feed mix while reducing
the starch. The fat quality in high oil
corn is also more consistent than in
rendered fat.
Tests have shown pigs require Tess
feed to gain the same weight. For
lactating pigs, high oil corn shows a
saving of $15.52 per tonne of feed
(52 cents a bushel) and for grower
