The Rural Voice, 1998-03, Page 25ROPS SAVES LIVES Tractor rollovers are the largest single cause of agricultural machinery -related deaths. Farm tractors are associated with 47.5% of farm related fatalities. Tractor rollovers and runovers are the leading causes of death. In most cases there was no ROPS on the tractor. ROPS are available as protective steel frames or quiet, dust proof enclosures. Many manufacturers now offer retrofit ROPS for most of their older models. At time of purchase, make sure ROPS meets performance criteria established by the Canadian Standards Association. A homemade ROPS Is not recommended. LMS EQUIPMENT INC. Together post warning stickers on machinery, bins, augers, power poles, wells and fuel tanks. 2. Keep tractors and machine operations strictly off-limits to young children. 3. Properly train and supervise young people before allowing them to operate machinery or drive tractors. Teenagers should only operate equipment when they are physically big and mature enough to handle equipment. 4. Be firm! Refuse to take passengers on tractors or implements. Remember, one seat - one operator. 5. Explain the meaning of hazard symbols. 6. Store hazardous chemicals in locked cabinets. 7. Keep protective shields on machinery at all times. 8. Enclose manure pits and farm ponds with fences and post warning signs. 9. Properly supervise children when going near large animals. 10. Place machinery components, electrical boxes and wiring out of reach of small children. 11. Provide a fenced play area for children near the house. 12. Place heavy cement lids on wells and septic tanks. 13. Store portable ladders away from danger areas such as silos and large grain bins. Fit the bottoms of fixed ladders with a special barrier. 14. Before starting machinery, make sure no one is behind, under or in front of you. 15. Leave any equipment that might fall, such as front-end loaders, in the down position or block them up. 16. Always leave a tractor power take off (PTO) in neutral. 17. Store unloaded hunting firearms in a locked cabinet with a trigger Iltrk.
