Young farmers gave views at OFA Convention
Young Farmers got their chance to make their concerns known at the OFA Convention
"Leading a Growing Community" held in Toronto on November 24 - 25. This year the OFA
made a commitment to the young farmers of Ontario by organizing a session to hear young
farmer concerns, issues and talk about the future of agriculture.
Approximately 120 young farmers (four from Huron) participated in a Farm Issue
Discussion session hosted by Ross Daily. A number of issues were suggested — three
main issues were identified and presented back to the Convention Delegates as follows.
ISSUES
• Nutrient management - require compulsory Environmental Farm Plans and nutrient
management courses (manure/chemical).
• Farmland preservation - residential severances only adjacent to areas of growth;
don't allow residential severances; topsoil preservation policy needed.
• Image of agriculture - what is our image? we need to work on promoting a positive
one of Canadian, fresh, dean, healthy, good and safe; media co-ordination/dipping services
needed; give value to the readers/build ongoing relationship with the media.
Other issues identified included: facilitating young people's movement into agriculture; the
Employment Insurance Benefit issue and farmers; industry consolidation, farm land value.
There was a difference of opinion between young farmers actually farming and those
attending school. Young farmers with loans have a different perspective on what is
important in the short term.
Overall, it was a worthwhile exercise and it is apparent that young farmers must be part
of future conventions. The OFA and the HCFA need to encourage more active participation
of young farmers in our organizations to ensure that agriculture has leaders for the future.0
